My 2 cents (inside)

It all depends on the person, their relationship to the deceased, the complexity of their estate, their current workload, etc. There isn't an answer that always fits.

I'm sure some people get x days of bereavement and use x days whether they need it or not. But other people take x but really need more than that.

Bottom line, if a company has x days of bereavement then an employee is entitled to take those x days in accordance with stated company policy.

I recently took off 4 days (per company policy) for my dad's passing - but I needed 40 days. And yes, I gave all of my projects a heads-up, made sure I had coverage, and provided my cell phone as a backup.
